Maines came out as transgender at a young age and shared her story through Amy Ellis Nut’s book “Becoming Nicole, The Transformation of an American Family.” She was also involved in a legal case that highlighted her school district’s violation of the state’s Human Rights Act. In her memoir, Maines reflects on her journey from her home state to Hollywood, landing roles in CW’s Supergirl, Freeform’s Good Trouble, and CW’s The Flash. She has been recognized with nominations and honors for her work, striving to normalize transness through her roles. The memoir aims to remind readers that a happy ending is just the beginning of a story. “It Gets Better…Except When It Gets Worse” is available for preorder and will be released on October 15th.
