Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the Dreams of Indresh Malik from Heeramandi

Indresh Malik’s performance as Ustaad Ji in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut OTT series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is highly acclaimed. Speaking to Bollywood Now, the talented actor praised the filmmaker for bringing out the best in him.

Malik mentioned having worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali before in Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi and expressed his admiration for him. However, he emphasized that being in awe or fear of a director does not help an actor’s performance. Malik shared, “I am still in awe of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I can’t be in awe of the director and work with him simultaneously. I can’t open up as an actor. He used to come in my dreams at night. He would choke me. I told him this on set.”

He also appreciated Bhansali for allowing him to provide creative input during filming. “He let me get comfortable and go with the flow. He even permitted me to improvise my dialogues, for which I am grateful,” Malik exclaimed.

Referring to the filmmaker as a ‘perfectionist,’ he added, “If there is a term beyond perfectionist, he fits it. He is an institution in himself. I learned a lot from him and will continue to learn. I am a director’s actor, I surrender.”

Recently, Malik shared a behind-the-scenes clip of himself learning to dance on the Heeramandi set. He wrote, “One of my favorite moments on set was when I was surprised with a dance performance. I immediately started rehearsing with Simran and Preeti. While dancing in my style, Sanjay ji observed the chaos created by my moves on his set.”
