Kevin Costner has acknowledged that while he caters to a male audience, female characters play significant roles in his films. In a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the 69-year-old actor and director of Horizon: An American Saga discussed his approach to filmmaking.
Costner emphasized the importance of strong female characters in driving the narrative of his films. He stressed the involvement of women in all aspects of the story, noting that it enriches the storyline.
In Horizon: An American Saga, Costner praised the performances of Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee, and Ella Hunt. He specifically highlighted Miller’s exceptional acting skills and beauty, describing her as a talented actress in her prime. Costner expressed his comfort in portraying scenes featuring women and young girls raised by women, as it added depth to the narrative.
Costner took on the roles of actor, director, and producer in Horizon: An American Saga, a two-part theatrical production. The first chapter premiered in theaters last Friday, with the second chapter scheduled for release on August 16.
The film features a stellar cast, including Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee, Ella Hunt, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, and Jamie Campbell Bower.

Horizon: An American Saga is a drama series depicting the era before and after the American Civil War, aiming to capture the essence of Western Expansion. Costner initially focused on male characters in this Western series but included prominent female characters in every scene of Waterworld. When questioned about his portrayal of women in his work, Costner, known for his role in Dances With Wolves, expressed his support for female characters. He believes that this inclusive approach has contributed to his enduring relevance and popularity.
“I make movies for men. That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters, and that’s how I’ve conducted my career,” said the Dances With Wolves star and director. “And I think that’s why I have a good following. I thank you women for dragging your men here. It was a Western, after all.”
Horizon: An American Saga is a four-part series showcasing the director’s commitment to providing strong roles for women. By highlighting women characters in a typically male-dominated genre, the film integrated these characters into the storyline, enabling viewers to fully engage with the film.

Kevin Costner premieres Horizon in LA with family
Kevin Costner attended the premiere of his film Horizon on Monday. He filmed his latest movie, An American Saga, in Los Angeles, with five of his seven children, including Hayes, appearing in the film, with Hayes taking on his first acting role.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Costner discussed the honor of unveiling a movie to which he has dedicated nearly half of his life.
“It’s really nice to have a film celebrated and to have this particular film celebrated tonight and to be here with my actors, my family,” he said. “This is my town. I love being a part of the film community here in Hollywood.”
Horizon: An American Saga, Chapter 1 is currently showing in theaters. This four-part series portrays the westward expansion of America before and after the American Civil War.
