Will Smith performs empowering song ‘You Can Make It’ at the BET Awards
Will Smith took the BET Awards stage on Sunday night to debut a new song, “You Can Make It,” with the Sunday Service Choir, Chandler Moore, and Kirk Franklin providing backup vocals.
Smith began his performance standing on a lava-themed stage, surrounded by fire, and delivering powerful lyrics such as: “The darker the hell you endure, the brighter the heaven you enjoy. The harder the fall, the higher you soar. God opens a window when the devil closes the door.”
Alongside the Sunday Service Choir, Fridayy, and Franklin, Smith delivered an electrifying performance that received a standing ovation from the audience. The performance concluded with inspiring words from Smith encouraging listeners to find opportunities in dark moments.
Prior to the show, details about the song and performance were kept under wraps. BET’s Connie Orlando expressed excitement for Smith’s return to the stage and the impact he would have on the night’s festivities.
On Friday, Smith released the song featuring Fridayy and the Sunday Service Choir, showcasing themes of resilience and growth in challenging times.
Reflecting on his musical journey, Smith’s career milestones include his time with DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, his successful solo career, and his acclaimed film roles. He has received Oscar nominations and won Best Leading Actor in 2022 for “King Richard.”
Despite his successes, Smith faced controversy in 2022 when he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars after a joke about his wife. Smith later apologized but faced consequences from the Academy.
In April, Smith performed at Coachella with J. Balvin, showcasing his enduring appeal as a performer. The 2024 BET Awards, hosted by Taraji P. Henson, honored Usher with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
