Will Smith makes a music comeback with new single “You Can Make It,” set to debut live at the 2024 BET Awards
Will Smith is back with new music following a five-year break. The rapper and actor, who has won four Grammys, has been away from the music industry since his 2017 track “Get Lit.” This release came more than a decade after his last studio album, “Lost and Found,” which was released in 2005.
On June 28, The Pursuit of Happyness star released a new song called “You Can Make It.” The track features the Sunday Service Choir and Fridayy and has a positive message about overcoming failure and finding redemption.

Will Smith unveils “You Can Make It” and will perform it live at the 2024 BET Awards
“You are in the smoke and the first / Tight rope on the wires / I see you’re broken and tired / And all your hope is expired,” Smith raps in the song’s lyrics. “So many tests for the flesh / Exhausted, gasping to catch your breath / Walking through the valley of the shadow of death / And when you think you’ve got nothing left, keep going.”
The song also seems to touch on Smith’s personal struggles, including the 2022 Oscars incident with Chris Rock. Lyrics like “Believe me they tried to bleed Will Smith / In the rearview, I see adversity was the gift” suggest a reflection on challenging times.
Smith emphasizes overcoming challenges and finding light in the darkness in lines such as “Out of the madness, out of the maze / Out of the sadness into the rays / The darkest of nights turns into day / And every storm runs out of rain.”
After releasing the song, Smith shared a video of himself playing a piano version of the track on social media. He expressed how music has always been a source of comfort and growth in his darkest moments and hopes the song can bring joy and light to listeners.
Smith announced that he will perform “You Can Make It” live at the 2024 BET Awards on June 30.

BET recently confirmed that Smith will be among the performers at the star-studded 2024 BET Awards ceremony. The event will also feature artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Ice Spice, GloRilla, Tyla, Victoria Monét, and Latto.
Connie Orlando of BET welcomed Smith’s participation at the ceremony, acknowledging his iconic status as a rapper, actor, and global figure.
Smith’s return to music coincides with the success of the latest Bad Boys movie alongside Martin Lawrence.
The 2024 BET Awards will be broadcast live on BET’s cable network and website, starting at 8 p.m. ET.
