How the 2024 Met Gala Exhibition Defied Anna Wintour’s Long-Standing Rule
Once upon a time, Anna Wintour caused some confusion.
For the 2024 Met Gala, attendees were encouraged to follow the “Garden of Time” dress code, meant to complement the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition. However, Anna confessed that this combination violated her usual rule for the fundraiser.
“Well, this exhibition broke my cardinal rule,” she admitted in an interview with Today’s Jenna Bush Hager. “When we chose the title ‘Sleeping Beauties,’ it was poetic and romantic but open to interpretation.”
Typically, the dress code closely matches the exhibition’s theme, providing attendees with clear guidelines for their outfits. However, this year, with “Garden of Time” as the dress code selected by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton, Anna humorously expressed uncertainty about how helpful their choice was.
“I’m concerned that we’ve caused some confusion,” she chuckled. “I apologize for that. I anticipate we’ll see a lot of floral interpretations.” (And indeed, the red carpet showcased plenty of flowers. See all the fashion highlights here.)
