Why Shakira and Her Sons Found Barbie to be Unsettling
Shakira believes that life in plastic is not as fantastic as it seems.
The “Punteria” singer, who has sons Milan (11) and Sasha (9) with ex Gerard Piqué, expressed her understanding of her kids’ disappointment with the portrayal of men in the Barbie movie.
“They felt that it was emasculating,” Shakira shared in an interview published on April 1. “And I agree, to a certain extent.”
She went on to emphasize that she wants her sons to feel powerful while still respecting women. According to her, the 2023 blockbuster failed to achieve that balance.
“I appreciate pop culture when it empowers women without diminishing men’s ability to be masculine, to care and provide,” the 47-year-old explained. “I believe in equipping women with the tools and the confidence to handle everything without losing our core, without compromising our femininity.”
Shakira acknowledged the different roles that men and women play in society, stating, “We complement each other, and that dynamic should not be disregarded.”
