The sense of freedom Selena Gomez experienced after opening up about her mental health struggles.
Selena has shared that the journey to feeling better can be lengthy and filled with unexpected turns.
Back in 2018, she opened up about her mental and emotional struggles, stating, “I was not able to keep it all together. I was not able to put on a brave face or make things appear normal. It felt like a wave of pain and anxiety engulfed me all at once, making it one of the most frightening moments of my life,” she revealed while receiving the McLean Award in September 2019. This award is given to individuals who have contributed to raising awareness about psychiatric disorders and mental health.
“I sought help, and the doctors were able to provide me with a definitive diagnosis,” she shared. “When I received that information, I felt a mix of fear and relief. I was scared because the truth was finally out, but I was relieved to finally understand why I had been battling depression and anxiety for so many years.”
Expressing her gratitude for her support network, she added, “Although the struggles have not completely disappeared, I can confidently say that after a year of intense effort, I am happier, healthier, and more in control of my emotions and thoughts than ever before.”
