The Near-Quit Moment of Olympic Athlete Jordan Chiles in Gymnastics
Named after fellow sports great Michael Jordan, Jordan Chiles started her gymnastics journey at the age of 6 and quickly progressed through various competition levels, adding to her collection of trophies along the way.
Despite her accomplishments, the now 23-year-old didn’t always feel accepted.
“Every time I entered a competition, I wondered, ‘What criticism will I face this time?’” Chiles shared in a July 2024 interview with ELLE. “I faced racial discrimination. I was constantly told, ‘You’re not the typical gymnast. You look masculine. You’re too muscular.’”
Feeling like she wasn’t wanted in gymnastics, Chiles considered leaving the sport until Biles invited her to train at her Texas gym in 2018.
Reflecting on her past experiences, Chiles from Washington stated, “I wish I could erase that chapter of my life, but it shaped me into the confident individual I am today. Those challenges made me stronger and helped me embrace my identity. However, it took time for me to rediscover my passion.”
Years later, both athletes competed at the 2020 Olympics—where Chiles stepped in for Biles during the team final, earning a silver medal.
The UCLA gymnast gained widespread recognition for her flawless performance at the 2023 NCAA Championship, set to 90s hip-hop music, and secured a spot at the 2024 Olympics with her routine inspired by Beyoncé.
