Lupita Nyong’o Opens Up About Her Heartbreak Following Split from Selema Masekela
Lupita Nyong’o is thankful for the healing that comes from being part of a community.
After her breakup with Selema Masekela last year, the Black Panther actress decided to share the news publicly. Now, she is opening up about why she made that choice and expressing her gratitude for doing so.
“When I announced my relationship status to the world, I did it because I was certain about it,” Lupita revealed in an interview published on Feb. 26. When the relationship ended, she recalled feeling “a lot of pain and heartbreak.” She explained, “I looked at my social media environment and realized I didn’t want to contribute to the illusion that everything is always perfect. I knew there was a lesson for me in this, and I wanted to be honest about it.”
Sharing her vulnerability in October brought immediate relief to Lupita.
“I understood how people might interpret it; I knew it would take on a life of its own,” the 40-year-old shared. “But when I saw the comments, I was touched by the love and support. What resonated with me the most were others sharing their own pain and heartbreak.”
