Dolly Parton stands up for CMAs following Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter snub.
In the first track of Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé addresses her critics, touching on the backlash she received after her 2016 CMA Awards performance.
She sings, “They used to say I spoke, ‘Too country’ / And the rejection came, said I wasn’t, ‘Country ‘nough,’” questioning what truly defines country music. She reflects on the hurdles she had to overcome to reach where she is today.
Following her surprise performance with The Chicks at the CMA Awards, there were reports of footage being taken down. The CMA clarified that it was a promotional clip and not her performance that was removed.
