The story behind Gabriel Medina’s viral Olympic photo: Who is this surfer making waves?
Medina made a comeback to the sport later that year, but unfortunately injured his knee at Oi Rio Pro 2022. Despite facing setbacks, he remained committed to achieving greatness, ultimately emerging victorious at the 2023 Western Australia Margaret River Pro.
While garnering attention earlier in the year for his criticism of WSL’s judging, Medina expressed that winning an Olympic medal is not the sole measure of success for him. “I’ve faced numerous challenges over the past decade. I’ve secured three world titles, dealt with pressure, and heard countless opinions,” he shared with Olympics.com.
“I’ve dedicated myself to this moment with unwavering determination, but my focus is on enjoying my time in the water, especially at my favorite wave,” Medina continued. “I’m not fixated on outcomes or external factors. I simply revel in surfing here because it brings me joy.”
