Exploring the Song of Ice And Fire Prophecy in House of the Dragon
In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) informs her son about a prophecy known as The Song of Ice and Fire. This title will ring a bell with Game of Thrones fans as it is from George R.R. Martin’s book series that inspired the show. The prophecy plays a significant role in House of the Dragon.
Aegon the Conqueror’s words resonate through time.
What does the prophecy entail?
This specific prophecy is crucial to the Targaryen succession crisis. Almost two centuries before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon delves into a time when the descendants of Aegon “The Conqueror” Targaryen nearly brought an end to his kingdom and dragons in Westeros. Aegon himself predicted that he would witness a ‘song of ice and fire’ signifying an apocalyptic winter that would bring about the end of all things.
According to Variety, George R.R. Martin considered including a new scene about Aegon’s prophecy in House of the Dragon, even though it is not mentioned in his Fire & Blood book. He believed it was important for HBO’s TV adaptation as it would have relevance in his future books. Showrunner Ryan Condal reassured fans who were concerned about the original story being altered, stating that the inclusion came directly from Martin.
King Viserys (Paddy Considine) narrates a dream to Rhaenyra regarding this prophecy in season 1. Aegon predicted a dreadful winter originating from a distant land with complete darkness trailing behind, foretelling the arrival of the white walkers from Game of Thrones.
Alicent and Rhaenyra’s interpretations of the prophecy
Viserys revisits his prophecy on his deathbed, whispering Aegon the Conqueror’s name to Alicent (Olivia Cooke). Misinterpreting his final words, Alicent believes the king was referring to their son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney). This leads her to conspire with the council to displace Rhaenyra and crown Aegon II, sparking a Targaryen civil war.
Rhaenyra disguises herself as a Septa and infiltrates King’s Landing in an attempt to prevent the war. Despite Alicent realizing her error, she remains steadfast in her actions.
The war begins in season 2, episode 4, with Rhaenyra sharing the prophecy with Jace (Harry Collett). This forewarning has been passed down through generations in the Targaryen family.
By the time of Game of Thrones’ Lannister era, this prophecy had been forgotten. Tragically, it comes to fruition as white walkers emerge from beyond, bringing death and destruction. Aegon’s prophecy proves to be accurate after all.
