You won’t want to miss the bloodbath in Sabrina Carpenter’s music video “Taste” featuring Scream Queen Jenna Ortega.
Sabrina Carpenter finds herself in a violent feud with Jenna Ortega, the girlfriend of her ex-boyfriend in the Taste music video, which is the third single from her album Short n’ Sweet. The song explores themes of jealousy and insecurity as an ex-boyfriend moves on to a new relationship, testing lingering emotions and sparking outbursts of animosity.
The visuals in the music video draw inspiration from iconic Hollywood films such as the dark comedy Death Becomes Her starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, as well as the revenge thriller Kill Bill featuring Uma Thurman. Carpenter and Ortega engage in a gruesome battle, from tormenting each other’s voodoo dolls to stabbing, shooting, and decapitating one another.
The video opens with the Please Please Please singer laying out her weapons on a bed and selecting one to use against her ex’s girlfriend (Ortega). Instead of stabbing Ortega, she pierces a dummy figure and is then threatened by Ortega holding a gun. The background music features the lyrics “Heard you’re back together and if that’s true. You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissing you”.
Throughout the video, the pop star is impaled on a fence, set ablaze, and has her arm hacked off by Ortega. On the other hand, Ortega gets her eye stabbed and suffers broken bones as Carpenter inflicts pain on her voodoo doll.
A surprising twist occurs when Ortega accidentally kills the boyfriend, suggesting that he may bear ultimate responsibility for the conflict. At his funeral, the two girls bond over their ex’s toxic behavior. “Very insecure!” remarks Ortega. “Very insecure!” Carpenter laughs. “You kill me.”
Taste serves as the third single from the singer’s sixth studio album Short n’ Sweet, following her album Emails I Can’t Send. Previous singles from the latest album, including Espresso and Please Please Please, have garnered massive attention online and set new records as some of Carpenter’s most successful hits.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Nonsense singer hinted at the vibe of her album. “I love the aesthetics of the ’60s and ’90s — classic Hollywood, flirty, and fun. This is definitely the essence of my album,” she shared at the time.
The Wednesday actress also has an exciting project in the works, starring in Tim Burton’s highly-anticipated Beetlejuice sequel as Astrid, the daughter of Winona Ryder’s iconic character Lydia Deetz. The star-studded film is set to premiere in theaters on September 6.
