Did John Amos Get Fired From Good Times? Deceased Actor Discusses Surprising Departure From Series in Past Interview

John Amos, known for his roles in various projects including Good Times, shared in 2020 that he was fired from the show after appearing in its first three seasons. Good Times, produced by Norman Lear, premiered in 1974 on CBS and centered around the lives of a poor Black family in the Chicago housing projects.
During an interview with Vlad TV, Amos discussed his challenges with the writers of the show. He felt that his perspective on a Black family and father differed from theirs, as they were not Black themselves.
Amos admitted to being less than diplomatic in his feedback on the scripts, which eventually led to clashes with the writers. Despite this, he and Lear continued to collaborate on other projects and reunited in 2019 for a special event.
The cast of Good Times also included Esther Rolle, Johnny Brown, Janet Jackson, Jimmie ‘JJ’ Walker, Ralph Carter, Ja’net DuBois, Bern Nadette Stanis, and more. Amos’ portrayal of James Evans Sr. will always be remembered fondly, even after his passing in 2024.
His son confirmed the news, stating that Amos passed away in Los Angeles from natural causes.
