Venkat Prabhu discusses similarities between Thalapathy Vijay’s The GOAT and Vijayakanth’s Rajadurai: ‘I only realized after…’

Director Venkat Prabhu recently spoke at an event where he addressed the similarities between his film The Greatest Of All Time starring Thalapathy Vijay and Vijayakanth’s Rajadurai.

In a video posted by Movie Tamil on X (formerly Twitter), the director admitted to only discovering the Vijayakanth movie after The GOAT was released. He mentioned, “I only found out about a movie with a similar plot after The GOAT had already hit theaters. I came across many discussions on social media regarding this, which prompted me to watch Rajadurai.”

He went on to say, “If I had known about it earlier, I could have further improved my story after watching it. The theme of father vs son is a universal concept. I had watched several English movies with a similar plot but somehow missed this one,” (translated from Tamil).

Additionally, Venkat Prabhu discussed how one film can serve as inspiration for another, and how he personally learns about filmmaking by watching movies.

For those unfamiliar, Rajadurai is a Tamil film featuring Captain Vijayakanth in a dual role of father and son – the former being an honest IPS officer whose son is kidnapped and raised by an adversary for revenge.

The movie, directed by Thalapathy Vijay’s father SA Chandrasekhar, also stars Jayasudha, Sivaranjani, and R. Sundarrajan in pivotal roles.

In contrast, The Greatest Of All Time starring Vijay follows a similar storyline where an anti-terrorist spy agent loses his son only for him to reappear years later. Vijay portrays both father and son characters, with the plot orchestrated by a former villain in the father’s past.

The film received mixed reviews and features actors like Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Mohan, Sneha, Meenakshi Chaudhary, among others. It is now available for streaming on Netflix.
