Unraveling the Heartbreaking Events Leading up to Gabby Petito’s Tragic Death
The 911 caller mentioned to the dispatcher, as per the audio released to news outlets, that they observed a man slapping a girl while they were driving by. The caller reported that the man and the girl ran up and down the sidewalk, he hit her, then got into a car and drove off.
Another witness at the scene, known only as Chris, stated in a report to the police, as reported by CNN, that the two individuals were engaged in a heated conversation. Chris claimed to have overheard Petito asking Laundrie, “Why do you have to be so mean?”
Hulls, the Park Service ranger and visitor and resource protection supervisor for Arches National Park, confessed that she had a sense of unease about the situation between Petito and Laundrie.
“I was quite blunt with her,” Hulls told Deseret News. “I urged her to reconsider the relationship, questioned her happiness in it, and suggested that this was an opportunity for her to make a change in her life. She seemed anxious about being away from him, and I thought that maybe things would improve once they returned home to Florida.”
Later, she learned that a body matching the description of the missing woman had been discovered.
“I haven’t watched the footage from my body camera that night,” the ranger shared. “It’s difficult to think about now because I believe I could have done more to assist her. I struggle with regret, wishing I had spoken up more or found the right words to convince her that she deserved better.”
