Ulajh: Gulshan Devaiah OPENS UP about Janhvi Kapoor starrer’s disappointing box office performance; ‘Struggle is the key ingredient that enhances the taste of success’
Ulajh, starring Janhvi Kapoor, was a highly anticipated film in 2024. However, Sudhanshu Saria’s directorial had a poor opening at the box office. The thriller drama, also starring Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Meiyan Chang, and Rajesh Tailang, failed to leave a mark on its opening day. Recently, Gulshan reacted to the film’s disappointing box office performance.
On August 4, Gulshan Devaiah shared a report on the box office collection of Ulajh on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. He wrote, “Struggle is the salt that makes success taste good. The ones who don’t embrace the struggle will never achieve anything worthwhile. This is a tough business. Period.”
When a fan mentioned that OTT is the future where many films receive love and appreciation from the audience, Gulshan disagreed, stating, “Feature films are meant to be seen on the big screen. Hits and flops will always happen. Despite my pragmatism in many things, I hold on to my idealism when it comes to cinema. I don’t expect everyone to understand this. It’s a very personal thing for me.”

On the opening day, the movie only managed to collect a modest Rs 1 crore net at the Indian box office. Ulajh was released on 750 screens, competing with Ajay Devgn’s Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, while previous week’s releases continued to play in theaters.
Regarding the story of Ulajh, we follow Suhana Bhatia (Janhvi Kapoor), an IFS Officer from a family of patriots who is appointed as Deputy High Commissioner of India in London. Her colleagues resent her easy rise to DHC, presumably due to her wealthy family background.
After 3 months, she falls in love with Nakul (Gulshan Devaiah), a Michelin Star chef. Everything seems to be going well until a personal and professional incident complicates her life.
