THROWBACK: When Ranbir Kapoor ‘questioned’ Deepika Padukone’s choice of doing Cocktail, saying it was ‘not the right film’ for her

Flashback: Ranbir Kapoor raises doubts about Deepika Padukone’s decision to do Cocktail, suggesting it was not the best choice for her.

Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, and Diana Penty starred in the movie Cocktail, which was released in 2012. Despite being a favorite among fans, Ranbir Kapoor had questioned the Singham Again actress’ decision to do the film, advising her that it was “not the right film” for her.

During an interview with NDTV in 2015 while promoting Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha, Deepika Padukone was asked if Ranbir Kapoor had persuaded her not to do Cocktail. She revealed that when she was about to go to London for the shoot, Ranbir expressed his doubts about the film being the right choice for her. Deepika then asked Ranbir, who was sitting next to her, if he still felt the same way.

In response, Ranbir explained that Homi Adajania, who was his close friend, had made a specific kind of film and he wasn’t familiar with the script of Cocktail, except that it was written by Imtiaz Ali. Ranbir acknowledged that Deepika had many good offers at the time she was offered Cocktail, and she chose it on her own accord.

“She saw something special about Cocktail that I probably didn’t see. So I asked her, ‘why are you doing this film when you had so many good directors waiting to work with you? Why don’t you do their films?’ I think it was solely her choice and instinct which was stronger than mine. But yes, as a friend, I just asked her, I questioned her,” Ranbir confessed.

Furthermore, when Deepika asked if his opinion about the film changed after watching it, Ranbir honestly admitted that he was not a “big fan of the film” but admired Deepika’s performance.

Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail revolves around three friends, with Veronica (Deepika) and Gautam (Saif) as a couple welcoming a new friend Meera (Diana) into their lives. Things take a turn when Gautam falls in love with Meera.

On the professional front, Deepika is set to appear in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, led by Ajay Devgn, scheduled for release on November 1, 2024.
