Flashback: Johnny Depp’s Admission of Never Watching the First Pirates of the Caribbean Film
Johnny Depp had once revealed that he never watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The movie, released in 2003, was a massive success, launching a multi-billion-dollar franchise. Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow became iconic and a cult classic.
Depp reprised his role for all four sequels, with the latest being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017. The franchise has grossed over 4.5 billion dollars worldwide.
Discussions about a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie began before the release of the fifth. However, progress on the project has been slow, possibly due to Depp’s legal issues and high-profile divorce from Amber Heard.
Depp’s admission about not watching the first movie was shared by Matthew Belloni on Twitter, calling it a “baller move”. Despite receiving an Oscar nomination for his role, Depp has not seen most of the series.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Depp confessed, “To be perfectly honest, I didn’t see them. I did see the first one. I have not seen the second one or the third one.”
Depp reiterated his stance in a 2009 appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, stating he avoids watching his own films, similar to other actors like Meryl Streep and Joaquin Phoenix.
With Depp’s legal issues casting doubt on his future in the franchise, talks of a Margot Robbie-centered spinoff have surfaced. Some fans believe a fresh start is needed for the series, viewing the later movies as inferior to the original trilogy.
