Throwback: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was Karan Johar’s original choice for Anjali in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, not Kajol.
Karan Johar’s Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham has a huge fan following. The star-studded film has become a cult classic, with Kajol’s portrayal of Anjali particularly resonating with audiences. Interestingly, Karan Johar initially had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in mind for the role.
In an old interview with Komal Nahta, Karan Johar revealed that he had initially considered casting Aishwarya in the role of Anjali. He thought that Kajol might not be available due to her personal life and desire to start a family.
“When I was casting for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, I found out that Kajol might not be able to do the film because she was married and maybe interested in starting a family. So, I decided to approach Aishwarya. However, to my surprise, Kajol agreed to do the film and expressed her interest. I didn’t end up meeting Aishwarya as a result. But she was my initial choice and I kept thinking about it afterwards,” he said.
In a separate interview with DNA, Aishwarya also mentioned how Karan had approached her for the role. She pointed out that the script and character underwent changes that she wasn’t entirely on board with. Despite admiring Kajol for her performance, Aishwarya regretted not being able to collaborate with Karan at that time.
The film, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan, was released in 2001. Directed by Karan Johar, it follows the story of an Indian family facing challenges after the elder son (played by SRK) marries a girl from a different background (Kajol).
The younger son plays a pivotal role in reuniting his father and brother, adding an emotional touch to the storyline.
