David Henrie of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Fame Recalls Being Mobbed By Fans Curious About Show’s Ending: “They Would Be Sending Me Drinks”
David Henrie, best known for his role as Ted and Tracy’s son in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, shared that it became challenging for him to go out in public as fans would mob him and inquire about the show’s ending.
Henrie mentioned that after he turned 21 and went to bars, he was offered free drinks in exchange for the ending plot details, but he kept the secret to himself. During his appearance on the George Janko show podcast, Henrie discussed his experience playing the character and the difficulty of keeping a major secret for an extended period.
While discussing with the talk show hosts, Henrie recalled, “I remember, like, season 6 or 7 or whatever—by then I’d turned 21 and I would go to a bar and people would be like, ‘We’ve heard you know the ending!’” He added, “And they’d be sending me drinks to try get it out of me.”
The actor revealed that while viewers had to wait for nine seasons to learn who Ted ends up with, he was informed of the secret much earlier. The producers decided to film scenes for 90 more episodes during the second season, leading to the early revelation of the ending to Henrie. He shared with the hosts, “They were like, ‘We gotta [film] this kid out, as soon as humanly possible. We gotta shoot as many episodes as we can.’”

Henrie’s character in the sitcom was set in 2030, where he and his sister listened to their dad’s story of how he met their mother. While Josh Radnor portrayed the character of Ted in the show, Bob Saget provided the voiceover from years later.
Regarding signing the NDA agreement, the Disney alum recounted, “We were on set and the two showrunners came in, the guys who created the show, and they go, ‘Everyone out! Everyone out!’” He admitted, “They left the cameras rolling. They brought in NDAs, and me and Lyndsy signed the NDAs. And we’re like, ‘What’s happening?’”
“And they go, ‘Okay, we’re going to tell you what we think the end of the show is.’ So they go, ‘We don’t know, we’re in season 2, but we gotta get back to Robin somehow.’”
The show ultimately ended as the creators envisioned. After Tracy’s passing in the show due to chronic illness, Ted reunites with Robin using the blue French horn. The episodes of How I Met Your Mother can be streamed on Disney+.
