Despite the challenging name, Mary Poppins is celebrating its 60th anniversary on Aug. 27. (But don’t worry, saying the name loudly won’t make you seem conceited.)
Created by Walt Disney and directed by Robert Stevenson, the 1964 film features iconic actors Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. The movie tells the story of a magical nanny who brings music and excitement into the lives of two neglected children in London. Spoiler alert: her actions ultimately help them bond with their father.
Adapted from P.L Travers’ books and brought to the screen by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, Disney’s adaptation received critical acclaim and won five Oscars, including awards for Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Song.
