The Real Story Behind the Olympic Village’s Air Conditioning Ban
Discussing the absence of air conditioning during the Summer Games can be a way for athletes to start conversations.
The organizers of the Olympics have chosen not to have air conditioning in the rooms of Olympians. Instead, they have implemented alternative methods to keep the athletes cool.
“We have constructed these buildings to ensure they are comfortable to live in during the summer, in 2024 and beyond,” Yann Krysinski, SVP of SOLIDEO (the organization responsible for major Olympic infrastructures), shared with Reuters in February. “We have designed the facades in such a way that they receive minimal direct sunlight in the summer, and the insulation of the facades is highly effective.”
He explained, “Additionally, we are using naturally cool underground water to cool the air in these apartments. Therefore, air conditioning will not be necessary during the summer here.”
However, not all athletes were comfortable with this decision. Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic Committee, confirmed that Team USA will have air conditioning in their rooms. According to The Washington Post, teams from Britain, Canada, and Italy are also bringing air conditioning units.
