Princess Diaries 3 in the Making
A queen is never late, but this news can’t come soon enough.
The Princess Diaries 3 is officially in the works with Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim set to direct the sequel, E! News can confirm.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim—who made her directorial debut with 2023’s Joy Ride—said in a statement Oct. 4. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The first Princess Diaries hit theaters in 2001, marking Anne Hathaway’s film debut as awkward-teen-turned-princess Mia Thermopolis. The Disney comedy, co-starring Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, became a smash hit, leading to the sequel Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, with Chris Pine joining the cast in his first onscreen role.
While casting for the third installment—which was confirmed to be in early development in 2022—has not been announced, Variety reports the film will be a continuation of the series rather than a reboot. In fact, Hathaway has previously hinted at her involvement in the project.
