Yvonne Strahovski Reflects on Filming the Finale of The Handmaid’s Tale: A ‘Bittersweet’ Experience with Behind-the-Scenes Details
The Handmaid’s Tale is reaching the end of its six-season run, and Yvonne Strahovski is not ready to say goodbye just yet. The show, based on Margaret Atwood’s acclaimed novel, first aired in 2017 and garnered numerous nominations and awards, including 15 Emmy Awards.
The series follows the story of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), who is compelled to serve as a handmaid to a powerful Commander. Strahovski, who portrays the Commander’s wife, Serena Joy, recently discussed filming the show’s final season on the Bingeworthy podcast.
While she believes it’s the right time to bid farewell, Strahovski admitted that it was an emotional experience. Reflecting on her time working on the show, she shared the challenge of understanding the depth of the character she played. “Initially, it was new territory for me. I found it really hard at times to justify her position in life,” she explained.
As she delved deeper into her character, Strahovski found it “easier and easier” to embody Serena over the years. She acknowledged the bittersweet nature of saying goodbye but is looking forward to moving on to new opportunities. “Letting go of Serena will be liberating and will open the door to a fresh start,” she said.
After portraying Serena for seven years, Strahovski recognizes the need to make space in her mind for the character she played. While Serena won’t be part of the upcoming spin-off series, Testaments, the legacy of The Handmaid’s Tale will continue to captivate audiences. The show is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
