Hansal Mehta responds to speculation about whether Kareena Kapoor Khan’s new film, The Buckingham Murders, draws inspiration from Kate Winslet’s Mare of Easttown.
September 13 will be a special day for Kareena Kapoor Khan as her highly anticipated film, The Buckingham Murders, is set to release. Kareena plays the role of detective Jasmeet Bhamra in this upcoming crime thriller directed by Hansal Mehta. The film has drawn comparisons to the 2021 drama series Mare of Easttown, featuring Hollywood star Kate Winslet. When asked if The Buckingham Murders is inspired by Mare of Easttown, Mehta responded.
Director Hansal Mehta recently shared his thoughts on the comparisons between The Buckingham Murders and Mare of Easttown. He urged the audience not to make assumptions without watching his film.
“Decide after you watch. Don’t jump to conclusions,” he tweeted.
Mehta’s response was prompted by a tweet from a user who tagged him expressing disappointment in his film and calling The Buckingham Murders unoriginal.
“Mare of Easttown … God please!! Plz Get something original #thebuckinghammurders (sic),” read the tweet.

During the trailer launch of The Buckingham Murders, Kareena Kapoor spoke about her admiration for Kate Winslet, calling herself a huge fan of the Titanic star. She mentioned that she closely follows Winslet’s work but clarified that her character Jasmeet in Hansal Mehta’s film is her own interpretation.
The actress believes there is no harm in drawing inspiration from other actors, stating that actors often need motivation and drawing inspiration from fellow actors is acceptable.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is co-producing The Buckingham Murders along with Shobha Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor. The film also features Ranveer Brar, Ash Tandon, and Keith Allen. In the movie, Kareena’s character Jasmeet goes through a thrilling journey as she uncovers the truth behind a murder mystery while dealing with a range of emotions. She plays a grieving detective traumatized by the murder of her child who moves to a new town to investigate a missing child case.
Meanwhile, Mare of Easttown is an American TV series starring Kate Winslet as Marianne Sheehan aka Mare, a police detective tasked with solving the murder of a teenage mother in the 2021 series.
