Singapore News: Edwin Tong discloses how Singapore secured Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour
Excited for it? Taylor Swift is currently in town for her highly anticipated Eras Tour, with Singapore being her only stop in Southeast Asia.
Prior to the start of the six sold-out concerts today (March 2), Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong spoke to AsiaOne about how Singapore secured the opportunity.
During the interview at the National Stadium, he expressed, “We wanted to bring the Taylor Swift concert to Singapore for the Swifties here to enjoy.”
Recognizing the significant benefits it would bring to Singapore, Minister Tong and his team quickly proposed that the American popstar perform here, even before she announced her international tour dates.
In February 2023, he met with her promoters and agents in Los Angeles, accompanied by a team from MCCY, Sport Singapore, and Kallang Alive.
“We also suggested making Singapore the final stop of a particular leg of her concert tour so that we could extend the dates,” Minister Tong revealed.
As a result of their efforts, the concert became extremely popular. Initially scheduled for three nights, they increased it to six nights.
The hard work paid off, with over 300,000 tickets sold and a large number of Swifties traveling to Singapore to attend the shows.
The six shows in Singapore mark one of the highest number of performances the singer has ever held in a single city around the world.
Minister Tong highlighted that bringing Taylor Swift’s concert to Singapore demonstrates the ability of Kallang Alive and SportSG to attract top-tier events.
“It showcases Singapore’s capability to host such concerts,” he added.
“I believe it enhances our cultural diversity and makes Singapore an exciting destination.”
