Taylor Swift expresses admiration for Charlie XCX’s creativity and hard work
The recent speculation about the rivalry between musicians Taylor Swift and Charli XCX has finally been put to rest. In a recent feature published by New York Magazine, Swift shared her thoughts on Charli XCX, who has gained popularity in the industry after the release of her sixth studio album, “BRAT.”
“I’ve always been impressed by Charli’s melodic talents since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011. Her songwriting is unique and innovative,” the pop superstar told the publication. Swift and Charli have been friends for a long time, with Charli even opening for Swift during her 2018 Reputation World Tour. “She takes a song in unexpected directions and has been consistently doing it for over a decade. It’s great to see hard work like hers pay off,” Swift added.
The rumored feud between the two artists was sparked by one of Charli’s songs from “BRAT” called “Sympathy is a Knife.” In the track, Charli seems to address an unknown person while exploring her own insecurities. Lyrics like “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show, Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick,” led many to speculate that it referred to Swift’s past relationship with Matty Healy from the band 1975. Worth noting is that Healy’s bandmate George Daniel is engaged to Charli.
Speaking on the matter, Charli denied that the song was aimed at anyone specific in the media. “People will think what they want,” she said, explaining that the song delves into her own feelings and insecurities, and her desire to avoid situations that make her doubt herself.
One standout moment from her latest album was her collaboration with Lorde, another contemporary musician. The remix of the song “Girl, So Confusing” featuring Lorde explores the complex relationship between the two artists.
