Morgan Spurlock, Star of Super Size Me, Dies at 53 Following Battle with Cancer
Director Morgan Spurlock, known for his documentary Super Size Me, has passed away at the age of 53 due to complications of cancer, two decades after the film’s release.
His family confirmed his passing in New York on May 23 after a private health battle.
“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” said his sibling and frequent collaborator Craig Spurlock in a statement obtained by NBC News on May 24. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity.”
“The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man,” he continued. “I am so proud to have worked together with him.”
Morgan gained fame with the release of Super Size Me in May 2004, where he documented his health journey while consuming McDonald’s food for a month. The film, which raised concerns about the fast food industry, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary feature. He followed it up with Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! in 2017.
