Controversial Stereophonic Performance Scheduled for Tony Awards Following Public Backlash
Stereophonic is now scheduled to perform at the Tony Awards.
The decision comes after protests from fans and the playwright, David Adjmi, as the initial performance lineup did not include the show. Stereophonic is a play with a score by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, and has received nominations for best score and 12 other Tonys.
Tony producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner hinted at the show’s performance in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. They mentioned ongoing discussions about the performance.
Weiss stated, “There are discussions happening, but stay tuned for more updates. Many aspects are still being worked on for the show.”
On June 6, fans were disappointed when Stereophonic was not in the initial lineup. Playwright David Adjmi expressed his disappointment on X, mentioning that they wanted to perform but were not given the opportunity.
Other performances at the ceremony include casts from nominated musicals such as Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Merrily We Roll Along, Suffs, The Outsiders, The Who’s Tommy, and Water for Elephants.
The 77th Tony Awards will highlight the 2023-24 Broadway season and will be broadcast on CBS. Ariana DeBose will host the show, airing live on June 16 from the David H. Koch Theater in New York.
Julianne Hough and Utkarsh Ambudkar will host the preshow, The Tony Awards: Act One, airing on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
The Tony Awards are produced in collaboration with Tony Award Productions and White Cherry Entertainment, with Kirshner and Weiss serving as showrunners and executive producers.
