Bush expressed concerns about the harmful impact of negative online comments, especially on young and vulnerable individuals who may be affected by false or hurtful information. She described these attacks as severe and violent, worrying about the impact on young people’s self-perception.
The actress also revealed that she wrote an essay for Glamour magazine to publicly address her queer identity for the first time. She also confronted rumors about her relationship with Ashlyn Harris, a former soccer player she has been in a relationship with for nearly a year.
“Shortly after I decided to be open about my relationship, the online rumor mill began churning out the most vile stories,” Bush wrote in her Glamour essay. “There were blatant lies, violent threats, and accusations of being a home-wrecker.”
During her podcast, Bush discussed how rumors and criticism had an emotional impact on her. She shared her struggle with negative media portrayals of her personal life. Despite these challenges, she felt liberated and empowered to express her true self and her relationship with Harris.
“I finally feel like I can breathe. The significance of this cannot be overstated,” Bush expressed. “I am reclaiming my power and standing up to acknowledge the most pure and special thing that has ever happened to me in my life, which you have treated as something ugly because you focus on optics rather than reality.”
