When every two years, the world’s top athletes gather for a shot at glory, all Olympians must abide by the rules, even if some may seem a bit unusual. Rules vary from the type of clothing or aesthetic required for athletes to general behavioral restrictions.
The summer and winter Olympic Games showcase some of the most unifying, heartwarming sports moments. However, it’s not all fun and games. If an athlete breaks a rule, regardless of fairness, the consequences could cost them crucial points or even their chance at Olympic success.
22-year-old Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was sent home from the 2024 Paris Games for leaving the Olympic Village without permission with fellow swimmer Gabriel Santos after the Opening Ceremony on July 26.
After being reprimanded, Vieira reacted disrespectfully and aggressively to the committee’s decision, leading to her dismissal by the COB.
To gain insight into the Games, here’s a look at some lesser-known and unusual rules in the Olympic rulebook.
Divers Must Be Confident
Under World Aquatics’ competition regulations, failure to execute a ‘bold, high, and confident take-off’ before a dive can result in a deduction of ½ to 2 points.
Figure Skating
Figure skaters have no specific uniform requirement, but there are strict rules. Men must wear trousers, while women can choose from various costumes, including leggings, skirts, dresses, and unitards. The International Skating Union prohibits clothing that creates the appearance of excessive nudity, often using flesh-toned panels for the illusion of skin.
In addition to attire restrictions, figure skaters are not permitted to perform backflips, as it is considered an illegal move by the International Skating Union due to the landing on two feet and not being classified as a ‘real jump.’
Water Polo
Water polo athletes must avoid excessive force, including groin grabbing, and are prohibited from using substances like grease, oil, or similar products on their bodies during competition. To prevent scratches, athletes must keep their toenails clipped.
BMX
BMX racers must wear loose, fitted long-sleeved jerseys tucked into waist-length pants. Lycra is not allowed, and long trousers are mandatory for safety in case of crashes. BMX freestyle attire regulations are more flexible, focusing on safety and functionality.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics, known for gravity-defying maneuvers, fascinates viewers worldwide. Makeup is allowed for gymnasts, but it must be modest and not depict theatrical characters. Bright nail polish is prohibited, and uniforms must conform to strict guidelines.
During competition, gymnasts can challenge a score by paying $300 within four minutes. If the challenge alters the scoring, the team receives a refund; otherwise, the money goes to charity.
Gymnasts can use spray water or chalk for grip on uneven bars, with honey being another acceptable option.
A unique rule in gymnastics is that Olympic runners holding hands at the finish line are disqualified due to the prohibition of contrived ties.
