Sofia Vergara Makes Special Request to Co-Star Ed O’Neill from Modern Family; Teases Sitcom Sequel with subtle hints
Sofia Vergara is teasing the possibility of a sequel to Modern Family. Known for her role as Gloria Delgado in the long-running sitcom, Vergara hints at a potential follow-up to the beloved show that aired for 11 seasons. While fans eagerly await a reunion of the cast, Vergara has a special message for her co-star, Ed O’Neill.
In a recent interview with Variety, the actress shared that the sequel to the original series may take some time. In the meantime, Vergara has returned to the judges’ panel on America’s Got Talent alongside Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, and others.
Speaking about her Modern Family co-star, Vergara joked, “I always tease him.” She added, “Ed, stay alive. We need you for the sequel, and you’re the oldest among us. You can’t die!”
Having spent 12 years on the show, Vergara played the role of Jay Pritchett’s wife to O’Neill’s character. Despite being nominated for an Emmy Award during the show’s run, she did not win but gained significant popularity.
Reflecting on her time on Modern Family, which aired from 2009 to 2020, Vergara expressed her love for the set saying, “I’d love to go back there.” She also hinted at the idea of a potential sequel, suggesting, “It would be a lot of fun. Maybe a TV movie?”

The offscreen bond between Vergara and Ed O’Neill has been one of warmth and mutual respect.
Currently, the actress is busy promoting her Netflix series, Grisdela, which follows the story of Grisdela Blanco, a notorious drug lord who was assassinated in 2012. Vergara serves as a producer on the show and has received an Emmy Award nomination. She has been nominated for two Emmys throughout her acting career.
Aside from Vergara and O’Neill, Modern Family also features an ensemble cast including Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Nolan Gould, and Ariel Winter, among others.
