In a surprising turn of events, Rathbone was on a Jetblue flight in 2014 that had to make an emergency landing due to an engine explosion. He shared the experience on Twitter, recounting how he, his wife Sheila Hafsadi (whom he married in 2013), and their then-2-year-old son Monroe had to exit the plane using the emergency slide.
Currently residing in Austin, Texas, Rathbone lives with Sheila and their three children: Monroe, Presley, and Felix.
On April 7, 2020, he posted a video of himself playing guitar, prompting a response from his Twilight co-star Nikki Reed on Instagram. She reminisced about their time together in Portland, watching him play multiple instruments at once and admiring his multitasking abilities.
