Sicily Yacht CEO Shares “Endless” Errors That Led to Fatal Sinking

Yacht CEO of Sicily Reveals Series of Errors Behind Fatal Sinking

The CEO responsible for the sunken superyacht believes the tragedy in Sicily could have been avoided.

Shortly after the superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy due to a freak storm on Aug. 19, Giovanni Costantino, the founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group which owns the company that constructed the ship in 2008, is highlighting what he sees as a series of mistakes made by the crew.

“Every action taken indicates a series of errors,” he stated in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Aug. 21, as translated from Italian. “The individuals should not have been in their cabins, and the boat should not have been anchored.”

According to Costantino, the crew should have been aware of the approaching storm, refuting the claim that it caught them by surprise.

“It was all foreseeable. I have the weather charts right in front of me,” he remarked. “Consider this: why did no fishermen from Porticello sail out that night? A fisherman understands the weather conditions, so why not a ship? The storm was clearly visible on all weather charts. It could not have been overlooked.”
