‘Shogun’ Emerges Victorious; Team Breaks into Celebration
Shogun concluded its successful night at the 2024 Emmys with a significant win.
The FX/Hulu series secured the award for best drama series, adding to its four wins of the night. With 25 Emmy nominations for its first season, Shogun triumphed over competitors like The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses , and 3 Body Problem in the category.
In his acceptance speech, co-creator Justin Marks expressed his gratitude towards the executives who supported the show. He humorously mentioned, “You guys greenlit a very expensive, subtitled, Japanese period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition. I have no idea why you did that, but thank you for your faith in this incredible team.”
He went on to state, “Shogun is a show about translation — not what is lost, but what is found when you do safety meetings in two languages, and you learn not to walk on tatami mats with your utility boots.”
Marks then shared the stage with star Hiroyuki Sanada, who delivered a message in Japanese that was translated in part as, “The passion and dreams that we have inherited from you have crossed oceans and borders.”
This marked Shogun’s fourth award of the evening, following its victories for Sanada for best actor in a drama series, Anna Sawai for best actress in a drama series, and Frederick E. O. Toye for directing for a drama series. Additionally, Shogun holds the Creative Arts Emmys record with 14 wins last weekend.
Succession clinched the award for best drama series at the 2023 Emmys for its final season, marking the HBO program’s third consecutive win in the category.
Eugene Levy and Dan Levy served as hosts for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
