‘Shōgun’ Leads the Pack in First-Ever TV Edition of API FYC Honors
After four years of highlighting Asian Pacific films for awards consideration, the Gold List is expanding to television projects for the first time.
Shōgun leads the list, voted upon by members of the Gold House community. The feudal Japan-set show, whose breakout success prompted FX to order more seasons, propelling it from limited to drama series in the Emmys race, tops the Gold List for outstanding series, lead performance (Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada), directing (Hiromi Kamata, Takeshi Fukunaga) and writing (Rachel Kondo, Emily Yoshida, Maegan Houang, Justin Marks) as well as honorable mentions for supporting performances (Fumi Nikaido, Moeka Hoshi, Tadanobu Asano).
“This recognition is particularly special as it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in celebrating excellence in television,” Sanada, who also is a producer on Shōgun, said in a statement. “Working on Shōgun has been a profound and enriching experience, and I am incredibly proud of the dedication and passion that everyone involved has brought to this project. It is a privilege to share our culture with the world, and I am grateful for the opportunity to bring such a significant story to life.”
According to Gold House, just 1.1 percent of Emmys in its 75 years have been awarded to Asian artists or Asian-led projects. Gold List’s TV edition comes a year after Beef swept its awards categories, while this season Shōgun set a record for the most-watched FX premiere on Hulu and One Piece was topped Netflix’s global watch charts in the second half of 2023. This year’s API-centered small-screen offerings also include two limited series literary adaptations, HBO’s The Sympathizer and Prime Video’s Expats, which tied for second-most appearances on the list. In all, 16 different projects received acknowledgement on the Gold List.
“Asian stories and talent have undeniably taken center stage this year, showcasing a remarkable breadth of narratives and performances that resonate across broad audiences,” Gold House head of entertainment and media Tiffany Chao said in a statement. “With an array of outstanding shows gracing our screens, the expansion of the Gold List to television categories is a testament to the rich diversity and excellence within the industry. We’re excited to honor both established icons and rising stars, and hope that all receive deserved recognition from the wider industry for their work.”
