Shakira Reveals She Paused Her Career for Ex Gerard Piqué
Shakira uses her new music to express her feelings about her breakup from Gerard. In an interview with the Times, the singer described her new album as a representation of turning pain into creativity, frustration into productivity, anger into passion, and vulnerability into resilience.
For example, the track “BZRP Music Session #53,” which was released as a single in January 2023, contains Spanish lyrics that when translated to English, say, “A she-wolf like me isn’t for guys like you, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh / For guys like you, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh / I was out of your league, that’s why you’re / With someone just like you, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh.”
Shakira mentioned in the Times how her and Gerard’s sons react to the song. She said, “They know that there’s only one way to live life and it’s accepting the pain. And each one of us has different ways of doing that.”
Milan, following in his mother’s footsteps, has also been processing his parents’ breakup through music. Shakira shared with the newspaper, “When his father and I were going through separation, he wrote two amazing songs, the kind that will bring you to tears.”
