Shabana Azmi recalls wearing her own clothes during film shoots
In a conversation with Hindustan Times, veteran actress Shabana Azmi touched upon the increasing costs of film shoots. She mentioned that unlike in the West, Indian producers have limited influence in selecting an actor’s crew.
She remarked, “In Hollywood, personal trainers are the only ones I have seen except for. The key costume designer, hairdresser, and makeup artist are all chosen by the producer’s team.” The National Award-winning actress reminisced that during the 1970s and 1980s, her team consisted of only three members – a hairdresser, a makeup artist, and a driver.
However, in low-budget films, she often had minimal assistance. “I wore my own clothes, used the unit’s hair and makeup person, and stayed in the same hotel as the crew,” recalled the 73-year-old actress.
Looking back, Azmi recounted her experiences while filming the 1983 movie Mandi. She shared how, despite being offered separate cars, she and Smita Patil chose to ride the bus with other actors, as they enjoyed singing and playing games. She even bought a plane ticket for her director after realizing he was traveling by train.
