Sarah Michelle Gellar Explains Why Portraying a Strong Woman in Dexter: Original Sin Was Her Ideal Role
Sarah Michelle Geller took on a new role as scientist Tanya Martin in Dexter: Original Sin, stepping outside her usual comfort zone. Known for playing strong female characters such as Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Geller found the role of Tanya particularly satisfying.
At Comic-Con on August 3, Geller discussed her upcoming film and character with Variety. She jokingly mentioned, “I’m the scientist. You believe me as a scientist, right? I do science-y things.”
Geller shared the importance of her role, revealing that the prequel is set in the 90s with her character as the forensics expert at the Miami Metro Police Department, a rare position for women at the time. She emphasized the significance of her character being a woman in a leadership role in a male-dominated field in Miami.
Describing her character as tough yet enjoying being the only female on set, Geller expressed her excitement for the role. She noted that playing Tanya was a dream job for her.
During the interview, the cast, including Geller, Christian Slater, Molly Brown, and Patrick Gibson, discussed the resurgence of Dexter, which has been performing well in the Neilsen charts. Dexter: Original Sin serves as a prequel to the original show that aired from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime.
Slater, who plays Dexter’s father, mentioned that the prequel complements the original show while providing more insight into the characters and events preceding the original series. He highlighted the freedom to explore new ideas in the Dexter universe.
Gibson, portraying a young Dexter, shared his approach to the character, aiming to bring his unique perspective while conversing with Michael C. Hall, who played Dexter in the original series. Gibson expressed his respect for Hall’s portrayal and acknowledged the opportunity to interpret the character in his own way.
Dexter: Original Sin is set to premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime in December.
