Salman Khan’s Father, Salim Khan, Reflects on Starting Out in Mumbai with Minimal Resources: ‘A Few Money or Job Worries…’
Prime Video’s highly anticipated docu-series Angry Young Men has finally premiered, offering a glimpse into the lives of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. In a touching revelation on the show, Salim Khan reminisced about his early days in Mumbai when he lived in a rented room at Marine Drive’s Marina Guest House for Rs 55 a month.
He shared, “I used to pay Rs 55 rent for half a room and wanted to rent the entire room for Rs 110, but that wish never came true. I had a comfortable life in my hometown of Indore, but I had to move to Mumbai to pursue my dreams.”
Salim Khan continued, “When I was leaving for Mumbai, my eldest brother said it was unnecessary and that I would come back. I didn’t want to ask for money from home, so I faced struggles.” It was during this time that he met his future wife, Salma Khan, who was just 17 years old.
Salim Khan, then 24, recalled their initial interactions in Mahim’s Regi House building, saying, “Our relationship started with exchanged glances. We would meet in the nearby lanes in the evenings.” However, Salma’s family began pressuring her to either marry Salim or choose someone they had arranged for her.
Fortunately, Salim and Salma decided to formalize their relationship and got married in 1964. The early marriage brought financial challenges for the family. Salim shared, “There were always concerns about money and job security. I accepted any work, including cigarette and clothing ads, to make ends meet.”
Salim soon realized that his true calling was behind the camera. He could explain characters to actors like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan but couldn’t perform himself. This realization led him to quit acting and focus on writing.
Angry Young Men is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
