Saif Ali Khan cleverly replies to Karan Johar’s comment on actors demanding unrealistic fees: ‘We are recession-proof’
Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan recently delivered a witty response to Karan Johar’s remarks about the high fees charged by stars for films. Saif jokingly said, “He wants to cut pay cheques,” which made him ‘nervous’. He then added, “We don’t charge that much, we are recession-proof.” Saif’s playful nature shines through in his comments.
At the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2024, Saif Ali Khan discussed the complexities of star remuneration in the film industry. In response to Karan Johar’s statement about stars demanding Rs 40 crores but not delivering at the box office, Saif humorously mentioned the idea of cutting paychecks.
He expressed a desire for a union on this matter and said, “I am sure he is right, but it makes me a little nervous when we hear about cutting pay cheques. No cutting pay cheques.”
Saif further elaborated on the economic dynamics of the industry, explaining how stars often assert their worth, leading to the high fees demanded. He noted that this sometimes distorts the economics of the industry.
However, he acknowledged the business-oriented nature of Indians and how the film industry acts as its financial hub where risks are taken. He concluded by acknowledging Karan Johar’s expertise in the matter, emphasizing that his comments were made in jest.
The actor also addressed Karan’s concerns about individuals demanding excessive fees without delivering results, a trend that is unsustainable. He mentioned, “We don’t charge that much, we are recession-proof.”
This conversation builds on Karan Johar’s previous comments during a roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter India, where he highlighted the issue of stars receiving hefty payments despite poor box office results. He mentioned his policy of not agreeing to inflated salaries.
Saif Ali Khan is set for the release of Devara: Part 1, where he plays the antagonist opposite Jr NTR in dual roles. Directed by Koratala Siva, the film has finally hit theaters. Devara also marks Janhvi Kapoor’s debut in Telugu cinema.
