Filmmaker S Shankar is currently preparing for the release of Indian 2 with Kamal Haasan in a pivotal role. The announcement of Anirudh Ravichander replacing the legendary AR Rahman in the iconic Indian franchise has created a buzz and surprised Rahman fans.

S Shankar explains why he chose Anirudh over AR Rahman for Indian 2

In a recent media interaction, the renowned director revealed the reason behind not bringing on board the legendary composer. Shankar mentioned, “When we began working on Indian 2, AR Rahman was already busy with the BGM of 2.0 and I needed the songs quickly.”

The filmmaker also mentioned his decision to not overwhelm Rahman and instead collaborate with the talented composer Anirudh, stating, “I didn’t want to burden him with Indian 2 and I was impressed by Anirudh’s music. His music was widely popular, and I thought why not work with him.”

The discussion on what could have been if Rahman had composed for Indian 2 continues to be a topic of debate. Nonetheless, Anirudh has been receiving great praise since the release of his work from the film, including songs and the trailer.

Anirudh on replacing AR Rahman

During the grand music launch event in Chennai, Anirudh addressed the topic of replacing Rahman in Indian 2.

When questioned about taking over Rahman’s role at the Indian 2 audio launch, Anirudh humorously referenced an iconic Rajinikanth dialogue from the 2007 Shankar film Sivaji: The Boss, “After six, comes seven… but who comes after Rahman sir?”

The music composer of the films Vikram and Jawan also added, “I know the expectations are high considering the sequel arrives 28 years after the original film. Rahman sir’s music is a great inspiration for me.”

Aside from Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan, the film also features Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, and SJ Suryah in significant roles. Indian 2 is scheduled to release on July 12, 2024.
