Robert Towne Shares Insights on Chinatown’s Prequel and Discusses the ‘Humbling’ and ‘Enlightening’ Experience of Collaborating with David Fincher
Screenwriter Robert Towne recently provided an update on a possible prequel to Chinatown. The 1974 film, starring Roman Polanski and Jack Nicholson, was a big success at the time.

Robert Towne, known for writing movies like The Last Detail and Shampoo, served as the screenwriter for the 1974 film Chinatown. He recently talked about a prequel series for Chinatown.
In an interview with Variety, Towne revealed that all the episodes for the show have been written, and Netflix will be producing the project. He also shared his experience working with David Fincher.
“Working with someone like David Fincher, while challenging at times, is always enlightening,” Towne said.
He also mentioned that they agreed not to replicate Noah Cross, the main antagonist from the original film, in this project.
“But we aimed to keep in mind that the crimes history deems monstrous are the ones that continue to impact the future,” the screenwriter explained.
What will the Chinatown prequel be about?
Robert Towne mentioned that the series will focus on the relationship between young Gittes and Lou Escobar. He found exploring the characters’ backstories, especially Escobar’s, to be enlightening. The prequel will be set in Los Angeles.
Towne expressed his interest in the character of young Jake Gittes, admiring his bravado and rule-breaking nature.
Netflix has not yet issued a statement acknowledging the series development. The platform refrained from commenting when reports of the show’s progress surfaced.
