Rebel Wilson Criticizes Notion That Gay Roles Should Only Be Played by Gay Actors
Rebel Wilson is speaking out about the limitations in the entertainment industry, saying it’s “total nonsense” that only gay actors should play gay roles.
Rebel Wilson is staying true to herself when it comes to her views on Hollywood.
The star of Pitch Perfect didn’t hold back when discussing the current state of the industry, criticizing the idea that male and female comedians should only joke about their own experiences.
“So say, if you are overweight, you can make jokes,” she said during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs on June 2. “But if you’re not — that’s kind of the situation now.”
Rebel pointed out how these expectations also impact actors.
“It’s getting to the point where they’re saying, ‘Well, only straight actors can play straight roles, and gay actors can play gay roles,'” the 44-year-old explained, “which I think is total nonsense.”
“I believe you should be able to portray any role you want,” Rebel persisted. “But in comedy, your job is to always push the boundaries of what’s considered acceptable.”
