Expectant Mother Rescued After Leaping From Two-Story Window to Flee Fire
Rachel Standfest deserves to be recognized as the mother of the year.
When a fire broke out at the barnhouse where Rachel, a Michigan native, and her husband Travis Standfest were staying last May, Rachel, who was 36 weeks pregnant, bravely jumped from a second-story window to escape.
“The last thing I remember is Travis punching out the screen window, and I could see my mom in the driveway yelling, ‘Get out now,'” Rachel shared in an interview published on May 23 by People. “And that’s the last thing I remember for probably two weeks.”
Although her courageous act saved her and her baby’s life, the 26-year-old confessed that her only focus at the time was “fight or flight.”
“In the moment, I know I was scared,” Rachel recalled. “I know both of us had a moment of, ‘Oh my word, is this it? Are we going to die?’ But I wasn’t scared to jump out because I knew that’s what we had to do to survive.”
Following the nearly 20-foot leap, Rachel was swiftly taken to the hospital where an emergency C-section was performed, bringing their daughter, Brynlee Rose, into the world.
