Vikrant Massey opens up about being typecast as a ‘poor, malnourished’ boy-next-door due to his looks
Vikrant Massey is currently preparing for the release of his highly anticipated Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. The actor, who portrays a grey character in this series, recently spoke with Mid-day and shared how he strives to humanize the character to make it relatable to people. The 12th Fail star expressed his belief that storytelling has evolved significantly over the past decade, with unconventional characters becoming mainstream due to their relatability.
Vikrant added, “Even if you play a complete antagonist and manage to humanize it, you will find a lot of relatability with it.”
The 37-year-old, who will next appear in the Netflix thriller Sector 36, admitted that at times people have certain expectations of the type of performance he should deliver. Massey shared, “I was often perceived as this poor, malnourished, simple boy-next-door. However, I have been fortunate with my writers and producers who saw potential beyond my physical appearance or perceived image.”

Vikrant emphasized that the portrayal in the second half of Haseen Dillruba was a refreshing change for those who had stereotyped him. The actor also teased that his upcoming projects will defy people’s expectations. He avoids similar roles because he gets bored and believes it’s crucial to break free from stereotypes.
“Jimmy sir [Sheirgill] mentioned in an interview that you can’t keep doing the same thing. Sometimes you want to do something intense and bring it home, and other times, you feel like doing mindless comedy,” said Massey, highlighting the importance of delivering unconventional performances.
Vikrant’s latest project Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, produced by Colour Yellow Productions and T-Series Films, is now available on Netflix and features Taapsee Pannu and Sunny Kaushal in leading roles. Following this, Vikrant will star in Sector 36 alongside Deepak Dobriyal, a crime thriller reportedly inspired by the 2006 Nithari case.
