Trailer: Uncovering the Rise of Feminist Queer Icon Merrill Nisker in Marie Losier’s Documentary “Peaches Goes Bananas”
Best Friend Forever released the trailer for Marie Losier’s documentary on the queer icon and musician Merrill Nisker, also known as Peaches. The documentary will delve into the pop star’s journey to stardom, her relationship with sister Suri, her creative process, and her role as an icon in the queer musician community. Peaches Goes Bananas is scheduled to premiere at the Venice Days sidebar during the main film festival.
The film is a product of Losier and Nisker’s longstanding friendship. Nisker expressed in a statement that her connection with the director was “special” right from the start of their acquaintance. She mentioned, “There was a special feeling between Marie and I from the moment we met — a comfort, a joy, a creative force, a knowing.”
Nisker also praised Losier’s unique filming style and hinted at capturing many spontaneous and heartwarming moments in the documentary. She remarked, “There are such sacred moments captured on film that I will always cherish, especially since the passing of my sister and my father.”
On the other hand, Losier commended Peaches for embodying art and lauded her “comfortable and natural” way of life. The director mentioned, “For me, as I age, it’s inspiring to see her body remaining beautiful and active, always experimenting and connecting with the audience,” in an interview with Peaches published in the film’s press notes.
Losier is known for her acclaimed documentaries, such as The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, which received the Teddy Award at the 2011 Berlinale. Her 2018 work, Cassandro El Exotico!, won the prestigious Cannes Award in the ACID section.
Carole Chassaing from Tamara Films, Sébastien Andres, and Alice Lemaire from Michigan Films produced the documentary, which will be distributed by Norte Distribution in France and Galeries Distribution in Belgium. International sales will be managed by the company Best Friend Forever.
