“Palm Royale Creator Dishes on Palm Beach Allure, Cast, and Season Finale Cliffhanger”
Abe Sylvia, the creator of Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, had been working on a show set in Palm Beach for years. Finally, he succeeded with the Kristen Wiig-led comedy series about a woman determined to be part of high society in the exclusive community. The writing, star-studded cast, and vibrant production design all contributed to the show receiving 10 Emmy nominations, including best comedy.
Sylvia discusses filming in Los Angeles, how the script changed with Carol Burnett’s involvement, and the plan for multiple seasons.
Tell me about the show’s origin, originally titled Mr. and Mrs. American Pie and based on the novel of the same name, right?
Initially very little of the novel remained in the show. The book served as a starting point for the character of an unconventional woman. Sylvia had attempted to develop Palm Beach-themed shows in the past, and finally found success with Palm Royale.
Why did you choose Palm Beach specifically?
Being inspired by Slim Aarons’ photographs, Sylvia was drawn to the tension and isolation depicted in Palm Beach. The show explores the wealthy enclave as a center of power and examines the blindness of the elite to the outside world.
Why couldn’t you film in Palm Beach?
Palm Beach was not open to filming due to a desire for privacy and exclusivity. However, the local newspaper, The Shiny Sheet, supported the show.
Where did you film instead?
The show was filmed entirely in Los Angeles on sets at the Paramount lot and various locations across the city. Los Angeles’ architecture, similar to Palm Beach’s, provided suitable filming locations.
Do you write characters with specific actors in mind?
While not initially, characters are tailored to the actors’ strengths once the cast is assembled. Kristen Wiig’s involvement led to adjustments in the script to showcase her comedic and dramatic talents.
When Carol Burnett joined the cast, how did that impact the show?
Burnett’s role as Aunt Norma was expanded after her signing, altering the original storyline. Her presence added depth to the character and influenced the show’s direction.
Why did you leave the finale on a cliffhanger?
Sylvia wanted to create intrigue and excitement for the audience, even before a second season was confirmed. The goal was to keep viewers engaged and longing for more.
What can viewers expect in season 2?
Season 2 promises to be unexpected and larger in scale. The team aims to build on the success of the first season and deliver a thrilling continuation of the story.
